New Orleans

After my third or fourth consecutive spin of the new Twangorama CD – the band’s first – three words came to mind: precision, melody, and nuance. The accolades that have rightly been showered upon guitarists Jimmy Robinson, Phil deGruy, and Cranston Clements make it a given that this collection would contain a plethora of jaw-dropping runs on the fretboard, providing a sweet collection of ear candy for six-string enthusiasts. Indeed, rarely does a lick go by that isn’t complemented by an equally impressive harmony run. What’s most impressive is that the CD isn’t simply used as a platform for those amazing skills – a temptation to which so many virtuosos fall victim. The melodies leave a lasting impression as a testament to the polished composition and skills from these veterans of the New Orleans music scene. Talent never overshadows the music; it simply allows it to be presented in exquisite fashion. There are three solo numbers, allowing each guitarist to express their individuality. With the accomplished rhythm section of Paul Clement and Mark Whitaker perfectly in synch, several numbers have a distinct Latin feel, with dazzling syncopated licks that would send Esteban into cardiac arrest.
